Cupcake Popper Puppets

By Emily Griffin Sheahan, publisher of Flushing Queens Macaroni Kid September 9, 2019

Autumn can mean rainy blustery days, and a need for some at-home activities. Create these fun pop-up puppets with stuff you probably already have around the house.

You will need:

  • A cup
  • Tissue paper
  • Some fabric (or in a pinch, heavy duty paper towel)
  • Cardboard or card stock
  • A straw or small dowel
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Crayons or markers
  • A rubber band
  • Decorative tape or construction paper
  • A pipe cleaner

Cut or tear your tissue paper and glue to the cup. Trim any bits that over hang. Poke a small hole in the bottom of your cup.

Glue two pieces of cardboard together, nice sides out, and create a face and back of head. Cut out. Cut a small slit in one end of the straw and stick head into it. (You can use glue or tape to secure it if you want.)

Cut your fabric into a semi-circle shape. Glue the straight edges together forming a cone. Use glue and rubber band to attach to the top of your cup. (If you use a stronger glue, such as a glue gun, you probably don't need the rubber band.) Cover the rubber band with decorative tape, or construction paper glued on.

Push straw through the fabric cone and cup, and out the hole.

Put glue on the straw just under the head, stick fabric to it, and tightly wrap pipe cleaner to hold it in place and create arms. Test pulling head up & down.

Play!
