Three Last Minute Halloween Decorations

By Emily Griffin Sheahan October 7, 2019

If you are anything like the average American, you love decorating for holidays. If you are anything like me, you're scrambling around at the last minute.

Macaroni Kid to the rescue with 3 big impact decorations you can bang out in an hour (for real!), using stuff around your house. You can hang these in windows, apartment hallways (make sure your landlord is okay with decorations), or on porches, to let the neighborhood know you are in the Halloween spirit!

1. Floating candles

These are great for any theme, whether you are going for truly spooky or a more mystical look.

You will need: toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls cut in half, hot glue, paint, battery operated votive candles, fishing line or invisible string.

Glue along the top of the tubes to look like wax drips.

Paint the tubes. Just note - acrylic paint takes about 20-25 minutes to dry to the touch, so plan your time accordingly.

Glue the string to the votive (don't worry, hot glue is easy to pull off after the holiday), then glue the votive in the tube. Hang from ceiling.

2. Jack-o-lantern jar or box

Perfect if you don't want a real pumpkin due to mess, or for fear it will rot in warm temperatures.

You will need: a clean jar or a box either painted black, or covered with black paper. Colored tissue paper. A box cutter or scissors. A glue stick. A battery operated light.

Cut out a face or silhouette from construction paper or a box.

Glue a sheet of tissue paper to back of paper or inside box.

Roll paper and put inside the jar. Place a battery operated votive or a regular flashlight inside.

3. Tissue ghosts

These were my kids' favorite. I let them make a ton!

You will need: white tissues, string, and a marker.

Ball up a tissue. Place it inside another tissue and tie it off, leaving a long string to hang it. Use the marker to make eyes.

Have a happy and safe Halloween!
