Do you have a budding artist or environmentalist in your home? Check out this poster project sponsored by the New York State Senate!
In recognition of Earth Day, the NYS Senate is sponsoring poster celebration for children in grades K-6 with the theme: REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE. Kids from across the state are invited to design their own poster promoting the theme however they interpret it. The posters will be displayed online and participants will receive a certificate. Posters are due by April 20, 2020. Participation is free.
“It is important to enhance environmental literacy of elementary school students,” said State Senator John C. Liu. “The Earth Day program will be an effective way to educate young generation about the importance of protecting the environment.”
Earth Day was first celebrated 50 years ago, in 1970 and since then over 20 million Americans have participated in events helping to improve the quality of air we breathe and the water we drink. Legislation such as the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act have since been passed to help repair and improve our environment but we need to continue to promote new ideas as our society changes and grows.
Students are encouraged to be creative and to show their ideas on how make our local environment a better place. By highlighting the importance of recycling, kids can help discover new solutions regarding the problem of too much garbage. The goal is to emphasize the importance of recycling and waste reduction and to encourage the exchange of ideas about recycling at school, in public, and at home.
